The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville presents Amie Siegel: Quicksand, the artist’s first survey exhibition in Spain. Bringing together a selection of her work across multiple mediums—film, photography, painting, sculpture— Quicksand addresses deep time and the evolving ecologies and economies of our material world.
At the exhibition’s core is Siegel’s monumental, multichannel video installation Asterisms (2021), exploring geological and social displacement on a planetary scale. Overlapping cinematic geometries are projected onto a sculptural, star-like shape, focusing on gold factories, oil recovery, artificial islands, and migrant labour in the United Arab Emirates.
The panoramic film Quarry (2015) traces marble from the world’s largest underground quarry to its idealised and speculative use in high-end Manhattan developments. A pendant to that work, Siegel’s Marble Dust Paintings (2019) are made from the sediment, water and vapour thrown off by the vast marble cutters that appear in Quarry. Her paintings continue the artist’s investigations into how value accrues, how the mundane can be transmuted into the precious, here transforming discarded dust into precious fine art.
The constellation of works across the museum’s historical spaces includes the sculptural installation Dynasty (2019), orbiting around a fragment of pink marble sourced from New York’s Trump Tower; Surrogates (2016), a continuous slide projection featuring moments of rupture and repair on the bodies of ancient classical sculpture; and the work-on-paper Listening to the Universe (2014), articulating the vacuum of sound that is outer space and our continual efforts to listen, or know, our sphere and beyond.
It is this discreet suggestion that Siegel returns to in the new sculptural work Hourglasses (2025), condensing the duration of a film loop, the movement of matter, and the fragility of elements in an urgent reflection on traversing our increasingly fractured path across human and geological time.
The exhibition is curated by Yara Sonseca Mas.
