25.7.25 - Anthea Hamilton ‘Cauliflower Sundial’ at Aspen Art Museum

A new outdoor sculpture by Anthea Hamilton will be unveiled today at Aspen Art Museum.

Commissioned for the Hecht Commons, Cauliflower Sundial takes the form of an enormous cast aluminium brassica, with a functional sundial positioned at its apex.

Rendered from a 3D scan of an actual cauliflower and enlarged to colossal scale, the brain-like shape and surface of the work is accentuated through the surrealist motif of the artist’s own lips, seen in relief around the octagonal base of the sculpture. As the titular sundial marks the passage of time, so the work’s distinctive, luminous patina continually responds to the natural world and the elements, catching and reflecting light throughout the day.

Curated by Stella Bottai, Senior Curator at Large at Aspen Art Museum, with Simone Krug, Curator.
