2.9.25 - Cecily Brown Artist’s Edition for Texte zur Kunst

A new edition by Cecily Brown for Texte zur Kunst, the artist’s third collaboration with the magazine, is out now.

The title of the work, The 5 Senses, alludes to the emphasis on sensual effects in Brown’s paintings, with their erotic subjects, gestural brushwork, and the physicality of their palette. Inspired by The Five Senses (1617–18), the series of paintings by Brueghel and Rubens each depicting one of the five senses individually, here Brown visually fuses them, while still hinting at the various attributes in her source: a stringed instrument, a fountain (surrounded, in the original, by “fragrant” flowers), a dish with oysters and a lobster, and what could be the globe from the allegory of sight.
