Michael Landy is participating in Panorama Pozzuoli, 10–14 September 2025.
Panorama Pozzuoli is the fifth edition of the annual city-wide exhibition, which takes place in a different region in Italy each year, connecting art, architecture, antiquity and the contemporary. Curated by Chiara Parisi, the exhibition features works by over 40 international artists in various extraordinary archaeological locations throughout the city, including the subterranean site of Rione Terra, and the Anfiteatro Flavio Neroniano – the third largest Roman amphitheatre in Italy.
Landy's Knock-off Idol originated in his exhibition Welcome to Essex at Firstsite, Colchester in 2021. He first created a 1:1 replica of the four-thousand-year-old Dagenham Idol—one of the earliest representations of the human form found in Europe—in Essex Idol (2021), inspired by the many copies of the ancient artefact found in museum collections today. Landy went on to create further versions of his own work through a series of knock-offs, of decreasing faithfulness to the original, as seen in Knock-off Idol.
Panorama Pozzuoli is presented by ITALICS, a consortium of more than sixty of Italy’s most influential galleries of contemporary, modern and ancient art.
