29.9.25 - Steve McQueen ‘Occupied City’ 34-hour screening at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Steve McQueen’s 34-hour documentary Occupied City will be screened in full in the Rijksmuseum auditorium, over the weekend of 11 and 12 October. This is a one-time opportunity to see the entire film with sound and narration, screened continuously, beginning on Saturday morning at 9.30am and continuing until Sunday evening, creating a unique overnight experience.

 

Based on  the book Atlas of an Occupied City. Amsterdam 1940-1945 by the historian and filmmaker Bianca Stigter, the film travels to over 2000 addresses across the city exploring the years of the Nazi occupation. The presentation at the Rijksmuseum coincides with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and the commemoration of 80 years of liberation.

To watch the entire film, a 34-hour ticket is available, as well as ‘day’ and ’night’ tickets, to join for part of the screening. 

 

The silent version of the film can be seen daily on the south façade of the Rijksmuseum, until 25 January 2026. On other selected dates, the film with sound will also be screened in the auditorium during museum opening hours.
