25.6.26 - ‘Luigi Ghirri and Gianni Celati: Verso la foce’ at MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna
MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna presents Luigi Ghirri and Gianni Celati: Verso la foce, opening this evening, Thursday 25 June 2026.
Curated by Lorenzo Balbi and Giulia Pezzoli, the exhibition documents the intellectual and creative partnership born from the collaboration between Luigi Ghirri and the critic, translator, writer and filmmaker Gianni Celati.
Central to the exhibition is a large body of photographs taken by Ghirri between 1989 and 1991, during location scouting and the making of Strada Provinciale delle Anime, the first feature film directed by Gianni Celati, which represents the cinematic development of his exploration of the Po Valley landscape in the book Verso la foce (1989). In this three-year period, Ghirri's camera accompanied and bore witness to the filmmaker’s research, capturing the genesis of the film in images that reveal a new and intense attention to the human figure.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication, with essays by Corrado Confalonieri, Gabriele Gimmelli, and Marco Sironi.
