13.10.26 - Michael Landy ‘Future Ruins’ at Sir John Soane’s Museum, London

In Future Ruins at Sir John Soane’s Museum, Michael Landy’s depictions of iconic buildings in ruins will be brought together for the first time, showcasing the detailed drawings that continue the artist’s reputation as one of the most talented draughtsmen of his generation.

Landy’s series was inspired by a work in the Museum’s collection: Joseph Michael Gandy’s watercolour Architectural ruins, a vision (1798), commissioned by Sir John Soane and depicting the then-Bank of England as a Roman ruin. Landy’s Future Ruins includes his own version of Soane’s Bank of England in ruins, where the grand structure has now been hollowed out with a Union Jack still flying over the decaying façade, and two new works of Sir John Soane’s Museum itself in ruins.

Other subjects include US President Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, the artist’s family home in Ilford, and his favourite art supplies store from his youth in Imaginary view of Owen Clark in ruins (2022). These join recent Future Ruins works depicting the Palazzo della Civiltà in Rome, Mussolini’s fascist monument to himself, and imagined ruins of the yet unbuilt Donald J. Trump Presidential Library in Ruin (2026) and Arc de Trump in Ruins (2026).

Alongside these Landy will present his Family Ruins of abandoned Irish cottages, Exform drawings, and a new sculpture, Broken Column (2026), which all further explore his ongoing fascination with value and waste.
