      John Gerrard: Beijing Art Summit

John Gerrard will participate in the Panel B discussion, Front Lines On-Line, at the Beijing Art Summit.

This conversation will debate the multiple directions and impacts, to date, of digital technology on art and culture, in China and globally — from both international and Chinese perspectives. Artists and curators give in depth reflections on the peer-to-peer culture, fluidity of identity and representation and new modes of thinking and art that are evolving now. In the field of art, where it’s all about relationships, how is the Digital Age shifting personal relationships?

Dana Schutz: Dana Schutz in Conversation with Hamza Walker, Stanford University

As part of Artists on the Future, a new conversation series launching March 2019, Dana Schutz will be in conversation with Hamza Walker, Director of LAXART. They will address the history and issues of appropriation and representation, exploring the paradox of artistic practice by asking the question, “Is all painting personal?” Taking the artist’s practice into account, the talk will also explore the paradoxical nature of the artistic process – a solitary act that is often offered for public scrutiny.

Abraham Cruzvillegas and Anya Gallaccio: Special Project at Ignacio Zaragoza Avenue

Ciclónica is a group exhibtion on the Ignacio Zaragoza Avenue (Mexico-Puebla motorway), where chain-link fencing separates the highway from the adjoining neighborhoods; this road is used to enter the city from its south and east sides, meaning some local businesses use these fences to advertise their services. Ciclónica invited artists to create an image or a text, reproduced as digital prints on one square meter canvases. The works were mounted on the fences along the motorway, and distributed in the following stations: Tejones, Caseta Vieja, Cárcel, Peñón Viejo, Clínica 25, Tepalcates.

The fence's original use for advertising presupposes a certain visibility for passersby and for people using public transport. In this way, the city is put to use, especially through the so-called peripheries,  as an exhibition platform to show the works of various national and international artists to those who travel through, or are displaced by, the city.
