Barbara Kasten: Scenarios, Aspen Art Museum

Scenarios celebrates Kasten’s expansive body of sculptural non-photographic work, through which the artist extends her exploration of spatial constructions into the viewers’ space and experience. 

Among the works in the Aspen Art Museum (AAM) exhibition will be examples from Kasten’s recent series Progressions (2017 onward), in which the artist affixes fluorescent acrylic shapes to the surfaces of her face-mounted photographs, creating a colorful and dynamic interplay between the sculptural relief elements and the acrylic forms depicted in her photographs. The site-specific work Elevation, installed outside of the galleries, interacts with AAM architect Shigeru Ban’s exterior grid of the woven slats that wrap around the museum.  Scenarios will also mark the first museum exhibition in the United States to include three of the artist’s ambitious video installations, making it the most comprehensive presentation of Kasten’s non-photographic work to date.

Caragh Thuring: Sirenuse Art Project, Positano 

The Sirenuse Art Project was established in 2015 in Positano. Curated by Silka Rittson-Thomas and commissioned by Antonio and Carla Sersale, the project annually invites an artist to Le Sirenuse to permanently present a site-specific and iconic work from the heart of their practice while considering elements of this historic hotel. 

For the 2020 edition, Caragh Thuring has created a painting and a series of gessoed panels inspired by the nearby Vesuvius as well as the hotel’s extensive collection of volcano paintings, gouaches and etchings.

Volcanoes are a sustained feature in Thuring's work, a cross-section of an erupting volcano being the first painting she made at the start of her studio practice. Thuring has since painted numerous views of volcanoes, thoughtfully exploring their symbolic, mythical and natural power.

Anthea Hamilton: The Institute of Melodic Healing, Frieze LIVE

Anthea Hamilton creates an immersive installation at 9 Cork Street consisting of a digitally printed wallpaper and commercially made black mannequins, which act as placeholders. They physically engage with the other live works through figurative language. In addition, a fragrance floats, albeit briefly, in the space. These were formulated with two performers the artist has worked with in the past.

Steve McQueen's Mangrove, one of five films that make up the Small Axe anthology, will open the 64th edition of the British Film Institute London Film Festival, from 7 October 2020.

Catherine Opie: 'Notes From America' Artist Talk, American Academy in Rome

Catherine Opie will discuss her work around community and home, as well as her recent road trip across the United States, with American Academy in Rome President Mark Robbins. Focusing on the idea of a place as a portrait, she will also touch on her interests to explore the Vatican with her camera during her residency at the American Academy in Rome.

Anthea Hamilton: Akimbo Stylee Documentary, Loewe

Artist and Director Ayo Akingbade directed a film on Anthea Hamilton, the British artist who created the wallpaper Sr Jeanne Wavy Boots w. Gazanias and Snails, 2020 for Loewe's Show-on-the-Wall. On camera, art historian and commentator Dr James Fox discusses life and art with Anthea Hamilton. The movie was filmed in Hamilton’s studio in Stockwell, London, at Open School East, Margate where she is the artist in residence and at Thomas Dane Gallery in London who represent Hamilton.

Alexandre da Cunha: Figurehead II, The Box, Plymouth

As part of a presentation of works, Alexandre da Cunha exhibits a new totemic sculpture from his Figurehead series, specially commissioned by The Box. In addition, a series of small table works populate the first floor in the North Hall — these playful sculptures are presented amongst objects and artefacts that da Cunha has chosen from The Box collections, creating a dialogue that explores domestic and leisure activity through thematic and material relationships. 

Finally, da Cunha's Affairs series occupies the South Hall and Active Archive; a collection of beach towels bearing national flags and consumer insignia, which explores his interest in stereotypes propagated under the guise of national identity.
