16.09.2019 - Michael Landy: Artist Talk, Chatsworth Arts Festival
Michael Landy: Artist Talk, Chatsworth Arts Festival
Landy will discuss the central role of drawing in his practice. As a draughtsman, Landy works in exceptional detail and often in large series, at times making preparatory drawings as a means to generate ideas. Landy’s meticulous renderings of detail have formulated series such as Nourishment (2002), a series of botanical drawings of weeds and H2NY - a tribute to Jean Tinguely’s failed self-destructing machine Homage to New York (1960). Drawing has been foundational to Landy’s large-scale series such as Breaking News (2015) and Michael Landy: Saints Alive at The National Gallery (2013), while more intimate series saw him produce 80 detailed portraits of his friends and family.

13.09.2019 - Glenn Ligon: The Seventh Continent, 16th Istanbul Biennial
Glenn Ligon: The Seventh Continent, 16th Istanbul Biennial
Glenn Ligon's contributions to the Biennial pay tribute to US author and activist James Baldwin’s life in Istanbul. One of the works Ligon presents is Sedat Pakay’s 1973 filmic portrait of Baldwin, From Another Place, which the artist has subtitled in Turkish for the first time. In two related videos, the artist pairs crowd scenes shot in Taksim Square with music from contemporary experimental musicians. Accompanying these videos are two date neons and the newest in a series of sculptures that display the word ‘America’. Ligon has installed these using mahyas, strings of lamps or lights strung between minarets on mosques during Ramadan, that spell out messages to the faithful. The work will change in appearance every two weeks during the exhibition.

Alexandre da Cunha: 'Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset', Art on the Underground
Art on the Underground have commissioned Alexandre da Cunha to create a permanent artwork for the Northern Line Extension. Due to open in autumn 2021, the work will be installed at the new Underground station at Battersea Power Station. ‘Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset’ is a monumental kinetic sculpture reflecting on daily cycles. Da Cunha uses an outdated advertising mechanism - the rotating billboard - to create two friezes which will face each other along the length of the ticket hall, stretching nearly 100m in length.
Throughout the day, the panels will rotate, presenting different colour combinations into the ticket hall. The colours themselves are extracted from photos of London sunsets and sunrises, their rotation creating an ever-changing environment. -
